Col. Billy Mitchell Namesakes North American Aviation B-25 Mitchells in fire fighting livery at Fort Smith, NWT, Canada [CYSM]. These two aircraft Tankers 337 and 338 were two-thirds of a tanker group contracted to Parks Canada for suppression duties in Wood Buffalo National Park. The Mitchell was named for Col. Billy Mitchell, who used this type of aircraft in the famous bombing raid on Tokyo in 1942. It was produced in great numbers in many variants and served Allied forces in every theatre of WWII as well as for many years after the war. To the best of my knowledge, these aircraft have since been converted back to "Warbirds," or military configuration. Fred Paget, photographer |
