Right Out of the Westerns

John Ford’s Point is the shelf-like formation in the foreground and is found in Monument Valley on the Navajo Reservation in northeast Arizona. It was named after the great movie director, who filmed a number of movies there from the 1930s to the late 1950s. While I was standing there, I thought back to all the old John Wayne westerns I had seen while growing up, from “Stagecoach” to “The Searchers.” In my mind I could see “The Duke” leading a cavalry charge across the valley below.
